I have briefly resided in .ca.us, though not in any sense engaged with
the place where I lived (it was 1999, one treated the apartment as a
place to sleep and read, and meals were something that one had in the
office or from reheated doggy bags)

In any case, my guess would be that it is much easier to tell oneself
that these things don't exist in California. Whether it will continue
to be easy when gas hits $10/gallon and interminable power cuts become
a reality in SFO is anyone's guess.
