On college campuses, which get a lot of diversity and new faces every
year there's a party week or two at the start of the year when all the
new people get to mix with the locals and feel welcome. Immigrant
student clubs will often turn up at the airport to welcome foreign
students and make them feel less threatened.

On a recent visit I noticed that Singapore seems to do this at a
larger scale - where there are a lot of neighborhood outreach programs
that bridge the ethnic gaps. There are weekly meetings, outreach
workers and such.

Maybe Chew Lin can expand?

My small Swiss town has many immigrants and holds an annual party
where I get to put a cultural tag to the people I otherwise only ever
see on the local train swaddled in identical winter coats and business
attire.
