The black is caused (in my experience) from excessive current. Also, 36 volts is on the high side. Try putting a 10kOhm series resistor with the 36 volts. With a high impedance voltmeter across the electrodes, you should see the voltage fall to 8-10 volts very soon. My constant current generator starts with an open circuit voltage of 30 volts, quickly falls to 8-10 volts, and finishes at 3-4 volts. At 10 MAmp, it takes only a few hours to make a good batch. 2 mA takes 10-12 hours. TomP
