--- Begin Message ---Here we are again, Additives Additives are also added to gasoline to decrease engine knock and increase octane ratings (engine gives more power from same amount of gas). Nowadays you cannot adjust your engine for different grades of gas. We would change the timing setting of our engines, to match the grade of gas we used. EPA won`t let you do it now,you would have to reprogram your engine computer, if you knew how. The best known additive was *ethyl fluid*, which was 65% tetraethyllead; 25% 1,2-dibromoethane; and 10% dichloroethane. The halogenated hydrocarbons are essential for conversion of the lead into volitile lead bromide, which is removed from the cylinder in the exhaust. Formulas (CH3CH2)4Pb tetraethyllead BrCH2CH2Br 1,2-dibromoethane (ethylene dibromide) ClCH2CH2Cl 1,2-dichloroethane (ethylene dichloride) A gasoline puts forth a variety of pollutants: unburned hydrocarbons (CH),carbon monoxide,and nitrogen oxides. The presence of tetraethyllead added lead to the pollutants. Now we do not put lead in the fuel. We use catalytic converters to oxidize the unburned hydrocarbons (CH) and carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide and water. The platinum catalyst used in the converters is poisoned by lead and would kill the reaction. Thats why we don`t put leaded gas in cars with catalytic converters. The octane of gasoline can be raised by other compounds. Benzene is added, octane 106. Others are *ethanol*;t-butyl alcohol,(CH3)3COH; t-butyl methyl ether, (CH3)3COCH3. A mixture of 90% gasoline and 10% ethanol is called *gasohol*. Very clean burning but not as much power as ethyl gas (less BTUs per gallon). Now the first posting by Jana on 13 Feb 16:54:57 stated that the gov was trying to get rid of us by spraying ethylene dibromide in the air, and in the post they claimed to use silver compounds to cure the effects of the spray. I addressed that posting,only because of the connection to silver. Then Vincent came with his excellent posting and things became confused. Ethylene dibromide is C2H4Br2, a straight-chain (thats what I talked about. Ethylene dibromethane is BrCH2-CH2Br, a branched chain (thats what Vincent talked about. These are two different compounds. They have the exact same number of carbon atoms,hydrogen atoms and same number of bromine atoms.Take a look,each has two carbons,four hydrogens and two bromine atoms. However the atoms are arranged differently and we have two different compounds. C2H4Br2 was used in the leaded gas days. Straight-chain. BrCH2-CH2Br is used now without leaded gas. Branched-chain. Both are oxidized by the catalytic converter. They are also oxidized by sunlight (decomposed). BRCH2-CH2Br is used in jet engines to boost the BTU rating of the fuel,however it is burned in the exhaust because the exhaust temperature is so high (around 3 to 4 thousand degrees). BrCH2-CH2Br is called 1,2-dibromoethane (ethylene dibromethane). Some times aircraft have to *dump fuel* if they are to heavy to land with the fuel load they have. Aircraft take off with reserve fuel in case of emergencys or having to hold in the traffic pattern a long time. Very often they arrive with excess fuel because everything went well (thank goodness) and dump the excess before landing. Most of the time this is done over water, but only at coastal airports. You can look up at the planes at any airport and see fuel dumping taking place. Its SOP (standard operating procedure). Don`t think anyone is trying to kill us. Who would pay all the taxes. Never seen a bird drop dead from fuel dump. Don`t think anyone is making clouds of hydrobromic acid (HBr), how did that get in here. Vincent stop that. Don`t think silver compounds or even CS will get rid of these organic compounds.The only thing we had to worry about was the lead, the rest of it catalyized,burned up or was oxidized. Now some people claim that the oxidation compounds from the catalytic converters are causing acid rain (oh-no not that). Now we know the the stuff causing acid rain is coming over the north pole from europe on the wind. They don`t have the high standards we have. CS is not an oxidizer (oxygen combiner) and its not an anti-oxydent ( metal binder or claimer). The vitamins are anti-oxydents. They combine with metals and are filtered by the liver. Then get dumped into the intestine and end up in the feces.
