Hi, Charles, Please read my reply to Sol's post . That explains where I am right now. I am not being rushed into anything. The surgeon uses the same words you just did, a horrible, terrible surgery. My regular doc, who has been through 12 years of working on this with me, is more in favor of doing this, not because he wants to "get rid of me coming to his office all the time , but because, having now seen the X-rays that show that I have a great deal more colon filled with nooks and crannies where gas and stool get held up. The long transit time may very well be due to my lifetime of bad habits like enemas. However, in my 25 years of teaching plus many more of tutoring, I had to be on hand every day and couldn't be running to the bathroom. There is more to this story from my early years, I won't go into all that. I ate garden produce fresh and home canned from our family's garden throught my early years. I never had money enough to buy pop and all kinds of other goodies. Except for a couple of years when I was in High School in a big city and worked as a page in a library. I earned enough money to buy my supplies for managing my colon, school supplies and enough left over to have a malted milk at the drugstore on the way home from work. During my marriage we almost always had a garden and a big one to help feed our six children. After they got big enough, they worked hard , too both at raising the garden and at preserving it. I always get started and run on longer than I should. Sorry. Ruth

C'mon guys, give Ruth a break. All of us, in fact. We all need compassion and consideration, as we all get what we 'deserve'.

I *am* being compassionate... I'm trying very hard to get Ruth to not have to spend the rest of her life carrying around a colostomy bag.

Getting old is no picnic- it is not for the faint of heart, or the cowardly. Everybody dies of something, and it is often painful and difficult.

I agree - but what would be more 'painful and difficult' - a few 'tough-love' words from someone Ruth has never met in person before that just might get her to try something that would save her from the horrors of a colostomy - or the horrors of having to live with a colostomy?

And Ruth - don't let what someone else says about it - I have known 3 people that had one, and while publicly, they all said essentially what you heard ('its not so bad') - privately, they told me they would give *anything* to go back in time and be able to choose *not* to do it.

It is your life, however... and you are the one who has to live with the consequences of your own choices.
