They are that white pfte plastic, or whatever it's called, coated with a form of plastic anyway Steve.
Sizes...35mm x 5mm (1 3/8" x 3/16"dia), and 30mm x 7mm (1 3/16" x 3/8"dia at the ring). Size of container...limited only by availability, any size you like. But you got to be a little careful on the thickness and convexity of the inside bottom of the container, I bought several glass containers the same at an el-cheapo shop and the bottoms are a little thick, still OK, but sometimes for some unfathomable reason, I need to use the other stirrer bar as one may tend to not spin properly, but this is due to my stirrer setup, 99.9% of the time they are fine, I think one of two of the containers, (as I rotate them), may have a slightly thicker bottom than the others, or an imperfection in the glass. I'll look for better ones one day. I think silver is a little like oil, it will get in anywhere given time, as the bars may darken in colour due I guess to the 'invisible' imperfections in the finish of the plastic. N. I read somewhere that the rubber coated disintegrates fairly quickly but it was being used at higher speed stirring yeast in beer. - Steve N From: Norton, Steve <stephen.nor...@ngc.com> To: silver-list@eskimo.com <silver-list@eskimo.com> Sent: Sat May 02 11:57:58 2009 Subject: Re: CS>Magnets What size bar did you get and what size jar is it good for? - Steve N From: Neville Munn <one.red...@hotmail.com> To: silver-list@eskimo.com <silver-list@eskimo.com> Sent: Sat May 02 11:29:58 2009 Subject: RE: CS>Magnets Sorry, I know what you mean now, yeah well that's what I did using a suitable sized nail with the 'head' cut off, but I didn't trust the sealing of the tubing, it worked OK, I just didn't trust any metal becoming exposed in time if that tubing seal gave way any, and for the cost of stir bars I just bought a few, they're fairly cheap. I bought both types, the ones without the 'ring', and the ones with the 'ring' on them. The ones without that ring are supposed to keep the bottom of the container clean while they spin. I've used both types but personally I don't think it matters for our purpose. N. Use a bar magnet with a o-ring around the center of the bar. I stole the o-ring idea from a good source. Then shrink electrical shrink tubing around the bar and seal the ends of the tubing with GOOP or hot melt glue. I suspect that the hot glue may not work but then it may.
