She really needs to see a Naturopath who has dealt with, and has
experience with, withdrawal and its symptoms.
Proceed with caution in using the suggestions below:
These kind of drugs work on brain chemistry, and I'd really try cold
turkey first, before adding anything else to the mix. Drink gallons of
water and take milk thistle, it's an herb that has liver
protective/repair substances, and blood cleansing properties. Look it up
online. Tramadol is processed by the liver, and the kidneys, according
to the information I can find on it. Avoid caffeine like the plague.
Green tea may be beneficial, because of the theanine in it. Or you can
find theanine in extract powder form, at one of the places I'll mention
later. It causes calmness, and gives an emotional lift, and even though
green tea does have a little caffeine, it's not enough to amplify jitters.
There's a couple of places I would recommend getting milk thistle
because it's good quality and organic. Mountain Rose Herbs is my main
best online source for fresh bulk organic herbs in the US. Their prices
are decent, and the quality of their herbs is superb. You can buy a
pound of the loose herb for teas, or you can buy the whole seed or
powder. The powder is probably the most economical way to go, since you
can buy a capsule machine, on eBay, Amazon, or right on Mountain Rose
Herbs, and some empty capsules and make your own filled capsules. I
shopped the net and got my capsule filler for around 24.00 shipped. And
it came with 1000 capsules.
Chlorophyll, to get rid of body toxins. It can be found at a decent
price at one of the places below.
I just found a bulk herb store on eBay with decent prices, but I haven't
gotten my order from them, so I can't vouch for their quality yet. They
have a very good price on organic green loose leaf tea, and green tea
powder, as well as a a lot of other beneficial herbs, and their shipping
prices are reasonable, to the 48 states anyway. Orders of 100.00 or more
get free shipping. Some of their prices are better than even Mountain
Rose Herbs. Our 4 Corners <http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Our-4-Corners>
Then there are some adaptogens like eleuthero root(siberian ginseng),
schisandra(supports liver and kidneys), Jiaogulan, american ginseng,
korean and chinese ginseng. I get the proper names mixed up because of
them changing names on me, but they help you handle physical/emotional
stresses, repair the immune system, and give you an overall lift. Some
of them are better suited for chronic stress, and some are better suited
for acute stress.
5 HTP, for the depression caused by neurotransmitters realigning in the
brain. I would not recommend St John's Wort because it may cause
serotonin syndrome if used with Tramadol. I repeat do not use St John's
Wort or anything that works like St John's Wort, with Tramadol or other
opiate receptor modifiers, or other anti psychotic, ant depression
medications.
Here's
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Johns_Wort#Adverse_effects_and_drug_interactions>
a Wiki article on St John's Wort that explains the chemical reactions.
Just because something is natural doesn't mean it can't do harm.
Bacopa monnieri, Coleus Forskholli, Huperzine A, don't seem to be
contraindicated. They all help with brain function and mood.
R-ALA <http://www.1fast400.com/?products_id=457> and Acetyl-L-Carnitine
Powder <http://www.1fast400.com/?products_id=1186> both of which the
best price I can find anywhere is at 1Fast400 <http://www.1fast400.com/>.
On a side note: R-lipoic acid has been shown to regulate
pro-inflammatory cytokines which may help with preventing cytokine
storms in the avian flu and the swine flu.
Both of these two working together are phenominal.
Then there are your other antioxidents Vit C, Vit E, vitamin D 3, And I
'd probably throw in some Inositol/Choline too. I got a huge bottle of
Inositol/Choline from Swanson, the best price I could find.
I'm hesitant to suggest this one but phenibut
<http://www.raysahelian.com/phenibut.html> works well for the sudden
anxiety episodes. It's legal, I bought mine from smartpowders.com(the
cheapest I could find), It works like valium, but it's safer, and it
doesn't have the side effects, like drowsiness. (It's not supposed to,
but at times it has made me very drowsy) So, just wait to see if effects
a person that way before driving, or any kind of activity that needs
alertness. It's also supposed to be non addictive *for short term use*.
I would not recommend long term use. I've used it a few times for a few
day only when life was particularly hectic, to chill out. I haven't read
anything to contraindicate its use in Tramadol dependency. And it has
been used in treating alcoholism and there are some reports of it being
used successfully in drug dependencies.
For sleeplessness, long term anxiety, jitters, and muscle twitches and
spasms. Kava Kava, and Valerian root work very well. Usually if one
doesn't work the other one will. Valerian can give you some strange
dreams though. Kava and Valerian Root are anti anxiety herbs, and Kava
is a mild muscle relaxant. I use Kava for back spasms, and charlie
horses. I gave some to a friend that was having esophageal spasms. They
hurt like the devil, and feel like a heart attack. And it worked like a
charm. Kava works well if not abused. But both of these can make you
drowsy. So don't drive or operate machinery or anything like that while
using either one of them.
I truly hesitated before writing this. You and your friend are going to
have to get online and do some research. What works for me may not work
for your friend. I had to use a lot of trial and error to find the
combinations that work best for me. Please don't just jump in and take
something just because it's an herb, or natural. Herbs are very
effective and generally much less harsh than synthetic drugs, but it is
their effectiveness that makes them dangerous if you mix them with the
wrong condition, other herbs, or prescription and over the counter
drugs. And I have no idea what other prescriptions or substances(herbs
or over the counter drugs) your friend is using.
And please don't take just my word for any of this. There may be more
information out there than what I have found. I mentioned these because
I have personally use these, and found them to be effective for the
situations I have described.
