I am not sure I can answer your questions, it sounds like you are getting some 
good clues yourself. But charcoal absorbs/adsorbs everything, and it can get 
used up quickly I have heard. When I bought some last to put in my new fridge, 
I got the activated aquarium kind packaged in plastic, which I thought might 
help with that, not sure if it did or not. I couldn't really tell the 
difference.
