There is often a triangle with a number in it on the bottom instead of the
initials of the plastic.  One key for the numbers is found at
www.plasticbottle.com/techinfo/codes.html (or was found there in the past).
PETE is 1; HDPE is 2.

If the bottles are made in the U.S. they are required to have a material
identification on the bottom. Look for PET or PETE or HDPE on the bottom.
