It sounds like the person reporting this has recycled a PETE bottle that once 
contained a sweet fruity beverage. Even if thoroughly rinsed with water such a 
reused container will impart a slight flavor of the original beverage to water 
which is subsequently stored in the bottle.

A virgin PETE bottle imparts no such flavor to water stored in it. It also adds 
no measurable ionic content to pure DI water (0.1 uS/cm conductivity) which is 
stored for many months. Any substance that would be given off by the plastic 
would tend to increase the conductivity measurement of the pure water.

I tend to place more trust in scientific measurements rather than fruity 
reports.
