I'm certainly no expert Laura, but once I figured out that you don't need
the salt for anything other than to get a reading with the tester so you can
use their formula to figure the ppm of the silver, I quit using salt all
together. You still produce the silver but you just can't test it with the
Hanna tester to see what level you are making. I know it's confusing and
that's why I was a little put out when I found out that it only measured the
salt----which you are not supposed to use. See what I mean?

Oh that's nice. Where did you buy it? Buyer beware. 

You could maybe test your tap water solids? :/ Offer to test your neighbors 
for a fee so they know if they need a water filter system or not ;) 

I've still got to read all the files sent to me from the group but was 
wondering about the salt as well. First site I found on it had instructions 
to add some saline solution so I added 3 drops. If you don't add it, then 
how do you get it going? Nothing happened without it.
