At 4:28 PM -0400 4/7/04, chris imposed structure on a stream of electrons, yielding:
one of my SIMS servers has developed bad sectors in its hard drive. As a
result, I've decided now is the time to move ahead with my desire to move
to a different mail server (meanwhile, my current one is running on spit
and band-aids, so I probably have to move fast or I'll be forced to fix
it).

My only reasons for wanting to move on are: 1. content filtering, so I
can start bouncing viri or spam at the server level based on email
content (ie: disallow attachments of certain types, bounce emails with
certain words in the headers, that kind of thing), and 2. better multiple
domain support.

What server product do others recommend? My only requirement is that it
be free (or darn near it). I'm not platform, nor OS loyal. Of course I'd
love to move on to Stalker's commercial product, but there is no $$
available for such an adventure (possibly when I do my other mail server
as it is for a real company... but that's much further down the road).

I've been thinking of Postfix or qmail, and I think I'm leaning towards
Postfix at the moment... but I've really only just started researching it.

I'd love to hear what others have used or moved to that fit my 3
requirements (content filter, multiple domains, free/ultra cheap), and
how well they do each of them.

When I have the time (maybe next week) I will be moving to Postfix.

My reasons do involve a little platform loyalty (I do not voluntarily use any MS software for anything) and a little ulterior motive (I need to learn Postfix because more people are moving to it) but I think it is a rational choice. Postfix is making inroads into the one place that Sendmail previously has been the only player: commercial Unix standard mail systems. MacOS is the first, but it is my understanding that AIX will be going to Postfix as well. It is the MTA of choice on some Linux distributions as well, and is very popular with users of the various BSD forks as well. I believe that for any system which is not standardized to some other credible MTA (i.e. Sendmail) in the modern world the default choice based on features, licensing, and future prospects has to be Postfix.

I tend to avoid discussing Qmail much at all because I get very impolite. I believe that if you appreciate the courtesy and helpfulness of Stalker's staff regarding SIMS and want that sort of civility and support from a developer, switching to Qmail would be quite a shock.
