"We are soon to be sucked into the body of eternity. My model points to 11:18 am, Greenwich Mean Time, December 21, 2012 AD. "
 ........ Hahahahahahahahahhaha....

That sounds like the punchline to a joke Eliezer would make while lecturing about probability.

But really (this is totally off topic for this list) ... as far as irrational magical belief systems go, this is an interesting one (especially seeing such radical spiritual elements attract to radical scientific developments like nanotech, AI, etc). Some interesting things:

"In other words, we probably invented language long before meaning, and it was some very practical person who got the idea that the words could have meaning. Before that, language was primarily verbal amusement."

"Magical philosophy, which has about fifty to a hundred thousand years under its belt -- as opposed to science which only goes back to the Renaissance -- has always claimed that the world is made of language. The world is a thing of words, and if you know these words, you can take it apart and put it together any old way you wish."

"All these disparate physical elements come to nothing if they don't add up to more than the sum of their parts. And the more than the sum of their parts is the transcendental element we call love. That is part of the eschaton that has never left us, but accompanied us across the African grassland and into history. Love has been bloodied and battered by the experiences of sexism and racism and so forth. But never lost as an ideal, never lost as a guiding light and an experience, and when we dissolve all the boundaries, this is what we will discover; an unconditional caring, an unconditional affection that goes through all life and all matter and gives it meaning. You don't have to wait for the end of the world to get this news. You can just short circuit the collective march toward that realization by accelerating your own microcosm of spirituality through the use of the hallucinogens. They are the doorways that the Gaian mind has installed in the historical process to let anybody out any time they want out, provided they have the courage to turn the knob and walk through the door."

(this is from here by the way)

Regarding 2012 ... while this list is open to discussion of *every*
aspect of the Singularity, as list owner I would like to maintain a
focus on the Singularity in the Vinge-ean sense, meaning Singularity
as an outcome of exponentially accelerating scientific and
technological growth

I realize that there is a connection between Vingean Singularity and
Terrence McKenna-an Singularity, and that this connection has seemed
meaningful to a bunch of intelligent people....  So, I don't want to
wholly outlaw discussions of 2012-ism and related McKenna-esque issues
on this list.  You never know where insights may come from.

On the other hand, I wouldn't want this sort of stuff to become a
dominant theme of the list either...

For the record, I don't personally find the McKenna-esque "Singularity
will come in 2012" notion at all credible, in spite of various
arguments I've read regarding the Mayan calendar, the Timewave theory,
etc.  I have had many discussions with 2012-ites and still have the
impression that this is all a bunch of flapdoodle ;-) ... [I
understand that the machine-elvises from the 9th dimension told
McKenna that 2012 will be the magic year; but, well, let's say that I
find it a mistake to take psychedelic visions too literally....]
