Proxy server is enough It is NOT mandatory to have a redirect server to establish a call. You don't even need a proxy for that, if you communicate directly user-to-user. However, there are a number of services and features that can be implemented using redirect server functionality in SIP nodes. You should also remember that you can implement this functionality in your user agent, not only in intermediate nodes. A very basic example is when someone calls you. Your phone starts ringing, but at that moment you are having a cup of coffee (for many people it is more important to drink it while it's hot than answering the phone :), so you press a button that your phone redirects the call to your secretary, phone answering machine, or whatever...
