very good morning.
i am a beginner as as for as SIP is concerned.i have some basic query in mind.
i have searched internet but i couldn't get any convincing explanation.
well.. here is my question.
we have different protocols like ..voip meant for internet telephony,H.323 for
video conferencing ,wap meant for wireless applications.
Then what lead to the evolution of SIP.
why its so popular and so widely accepted.
i am preparing a presentation on sip,if somebody asks me why we need SIP? when
we have so many protocols doing their job prefectly, where does sip fits in
and can we say that these prtocols will vanish after SIP comes into existence.
please clarify my doubts.
thanks for you time

Hi Santhosh,
Below are the things that i see, which makes SIP more
popular ,
It has a well defined Framework for Presence, Instant Messaging etc.
Text based, more like HTTP ,Easy to debug.
Aceepted by the Wireless world.
Not tightly coupled with other protocols around it.
More extensible.
Here is a good H.323 Vs SIP idscussion :
http://www.packetizer.com/voip/h323_vs_sip/iptel.html
Maybe using some H.323 and SIP softphones, and analysing the Captures will
throw more light , and reading more articles will help in
understanding more, and reaching a conclusion.
Hope that helps.
Cheers.
