This is more of a vmware issue. If you are using vmware 2.0/esx, then you need 
to login and look at your inventory and see if you have deleted something from 
inventory and not from disk. If so, you may need to clean that up. You can also 
add another disk and add that as a datastore and install your new guest on that 
datastore.

At the same time, you can create a small disk (8-10gb is more than enough for 
testing (I think). Creating a growable disk might be a better idea in a case of 
little use and not much space free.

I had the same issue using VMWare.  I ended up creating my virtual  
disk in Parallels and then converting that disk to VMWare.  I am  
uncertain why this issue would persist in one product and not the  
other.  Eventually I had to reinstall again for another issue and  
found that it appeared to be related to the choice of operating system  
that was selected when creating virtual drive.  I personally found  
that using the setting Linux kernel 2.6.x worked for 3.10 for VMWare  
but I had to change the setting to Linux Red Hat Enterprise 5 for 4.0.
