Using VMWare Workstation 6.5, I encountered the same issue initially. I also
changed it to be compatible with RHEL 5, and set it to be compatible with
Workstation 5 and checked the "Compatible with ESX Server" box. SCSI disks
worked fine, they are the only choice when targeting ESX as well.

I had the same issue using VMWare. I ended up creating my virtual disk in
Parallels and then converting that disk to VMWare. I am uncertain why this
issue would persist in one product and not the other. Eventually I had to
reinstall again for another issue and found that it appeared to be related to
the choice of operating system that was selected when creating virtual drive.
I personally found that using the setting Linux kernel 2.6.x worked for 3.10
for VMWare but I had to change the setting to Linux Red Hat Enterprise 5 for
4.0.

I have no problems with the 4.0 ISO on the VMware ESXi version 3. I select
Linux as the operating system and choose "other Linux 32-bit" under the drop
down menu for version. This is in the VMware Infrastructure Client 2.5.0.
