Jan, I don't think there's a right generic answer for every situation. Everybody's network is different.
For larger installs our preference is to use an external SBC (i.e., Acme, Ingate, etc.). The reasoning here is that these devices are supported by the ITSP's (they are certified). The other reason is that it gets the signalling/RTP off of the server. It also makes it easy when you start having discussions with an ITSP. I think we could focus on having some good configs available for various SBCs as we've done with gateways. Internally in sipXecs / openUC we need to continue to have something available for small installations and for people to test with. Whether we just maintain sipXbridge or move to something else, I can't say because I don't know. Whatever it is, it has to be simple and configurable from the GUI. There's too much effort involved with trying to certify with this ITSP and that ITSP. So in the wiki I think we can have known working ITSP's and settings posted for different ITSP's and continue having some canned settings as we do today. Given the complexities of interfacing with the outside world, I don't think that the internal SBC can be everything to everybody. My $0.02.
