Hi again,

Fine, I was able to compile it successfuly (70some warnings, but what's a program without those?).

Those are harmless.

And I put them into the _NewBase directory of an AppleGlot environment.

What do you mean with *them*? It's just one application bundle you should put there.

I made the first pass and it took 51 strings to translate. Too few in my opinion. It was almost everything about updating information. I translated it with lots of faith. And the resulting application has the update information and message boxes in Spanish, but everything else in English.

Does look like too little, it seems only the Sparkle framework is translated (and most of it already was).

I'm almost sure that it's an AppleGlot issue. If I open the console I can read some of these errors:
--
2007-09-26 00:22:05.134 AppleGlot[8106]: DebugAssert: AppleGlot: props != NULL NIL_PROP_LIST_FROM_XML_STRINGS_FILE [/SourceCache/ AppleGlot/AppleGlot-25/sources/plugins/StringsFilePlugin.cpp:901]

I'm not sure, it looks more like a debug message that wasn't removed for release.

Which I think are the problem here. You may think this has something to do with the path of my project, containing non-good characters like áé. A `pwd` from the trunk directory shows:
--
/Users/myusername/Documents/Programacion/Skim/source/trunk
--

That should be OK, and if the AppleGlot environment's path is like that there shouldn't be a problem with the path.

So I've no idea what's going on with this thing... I'm sorry to bother you with this nonsense and thanks again for your effor to solve it.

Cheers.

No thanks you for wanting to translate.

OK, this is not exactly what you should have done.

You should build Skim from source (in Release configuration). Then move the whole Skim.app bundle into _NewBase, and run the Initial Pass in AppleGlot. Then you should translate the Working Glossary (double-click it in the table, you may have to double-click twice).

It is not really a problem that you translated the 3 files you did (AppleGlot would do that the same way for you as part of the process, apart from the credits).

As for not being able to build, that is probably because you don't have a separate build location set? Go to Xcode's Building preferences and choose a separate build location (and also intermediate location). I have chosen ~/Development/BuildProducts and ~/Development/BuildProducts/Intermediates. This way Skim is able to find the intermediate products such as the Sparkle framework.

Ok, I think I'm doing something really bad. So I'm going to write what I did.

1) I downloaded the main trunk from svn.
2) I created a new environment with AppleGlot.
3) I copied the Spanish.lproj/ files into _NewBase.
4) I did the first step 'Initial Pass' in AppleGlot.
5) It showed me three files to modify: InfoPlist.strings Localizable.strings and ZoomValues.strings.
6) I translated all the three files.
7) I opened and compiled the source from the xcodeproj.
8) The compiler complains about the following error:
        Copying build/Release/Sparkle.framework (1 error)
pbxcp: Sparkle.framework: No such file or directory
9) I commited the three files into svn.

That's it. I don't what to do to take the translation strings from the nib files. I suspect it has something to do with some error of nibtool, but I have xcode updated. Thanks for all your help, and sorry for my clumsyness.

BTW, what did you precisely translate? Were you able to build Skim in the first place, because that's what you need to translate.

Hi Christiaan and list,

Well, I commited something, I hope it's the translation :)
I couldn't compile it because it complains about not being able to copy some files. But this time it generates an executable file. But when I open it it's in English, so probably I did something wrong. At least I'm not going to loose the translation since I commited...

See ya!

Hi Christiaan,

Ok, now I can translate all the strings of the nib files with AppleGlot. I haven't finished yet, but once I finish I'll upload it to the Subversion repository. I just completed the form to create a SF account. My username is alexcamara. I hope that's everything you need from me :)

Cheers.

Oh, and I don't know iLingual at all. I wonder if it is a good choice, from the (very) quick look it seems less useful than e.g. Localization Suite 2.0.

The reason I like to use AppleGlot rather than something like Localization Suite or iLingual is that AppleGlot works with human readable XML files, while the others have some kind of binary files that only they can read. AppleGlot is a bit less accessible (and rough around the edges) but that's mostly the first time you need to figure out how it works, for incremental updates it's easy.

I just added all the files for the Spanish localization, so if you update the svn source you should use those. It should compile fine in Xcode, if not tell me and I'll try to fix it. If you want to commit your translation I'll have to add you as a developer, do you have a SourceForge account?

Thanks for the advice. I just found iLingual and I just made a try to see how was the translation. It's awful. And I'm translating again using iLingual. Do you have any advice using that? I use the svn service to download the source.

Thanks a lot. But it probably is better if you can use AppleGlot or some other program to translate, otherwise you cannot do incremental updates, which is very important. AppleGlot should create the strings files inside the nib itself. Do you use svn to get the source? In that case I could add the necessary files for the Spanish translation to the svn source. Otherwise you can also just translate the latest release with AppleGlot.
