Trust me, the feat remains quite acrobatic! Holding down the trackpad button while pressing the expose button with the other hand then using the trackpad (still holding the button down) to select Mail, then (still holding button down to drag) using cmd+N to open a new email, use the trackpad to get to the open message part (still hoding button) and finally releasing the button...
