That took me a while to realze you meant, add a line:

  echo "parentFolderExt '$parentFolderExt'"

That shows that the value of $parentFolderExt is '' (empty).

It's finding the pdf and running the first part:

        if [ "$parentFolderExt" != "pdfd" ]; then

The conversion then occurs with

            /Applications/Skim.app/Contents/SharedSupport/skimnotes convert "$1"

This creates a directory with 4 files.

Is this the desired/expected behavoir of skimnotes convert?

As shown in the listings of my previous email, I am running in the
same directory or directing the script to a directory that contained
the PDF.  I'm running the script from tcsh with '.' in the path.  The
reaction of the script was to create files based on the input PDF, so
it must have found the PDF.
