While Spotlight shines (no pun intended) when it comes to the contents (not
their names) of the indexed files, it is at the same time not perfectly suited
for the task of a mere launcher. So, I think it makes sense for Spotlight to
push the term you searched for to the opening application -- if, that is, you
wouldn’t have used Spotlight as a substitute-launcher, which it is only sort-of.

What I really want to say: Use a dedicated launcher for locating/launching a
file, and use Spotlight only when you really want to drill into a file, i.e.
find a specific search term within it.
LaunchBar, for instance (there are also free alternatives like Quicksilver,
Butler, etc), is _so_ much better and faster as a launcher than Spotlight. And
you’re spared the nuisance of an auto-opening Contents Pane in Skim as well.

Best,
Hans
