I see several old mailing list posts and Sourceforge feature requests about
split view - people wanting to be able to annotate in the bottom view, or
to use the contents pane to navigate in the bottom view. These seem like
reasonable desires, and in fact I was very surprised when I first used Skim
that these were not possible.

Here's the one that really gets me though: if I open the split view after
already having used and closed it in this session, the bottom view opens to
where I left it before, not where I am now. Since I can't use the contents
pane in the bottom view, it seems the only way to navigate the bottom view
is to scroll through potentially hundreds of pages to find what I want. Am
I missing something about navigating in the bottom view? If not, what
exactly is the split view for? How do people use it practically?
