Since you're working with Windows XP you can either try using Mute.exe which might be fastest or I can send you or Sarah some info on how to restore sound via windows volume control. What approach do you want to take. Remember, this might not be the problem, but it does sound like your windows mute is on or windows general volume setting has been turned down or disabled somehow.
