Tks to all who offered advise on this one.
The problem revolved around an assumption that the RH distro scripts are
correct - *bad assumption*.
The ip-up and the ip-down scripts assume that $2 (the device) is passed as
just the device name, ala ttyS2. It isn't, it's passed as the full path,
ala /dev/ttyS2. Sure does screw things up, unfortunately the debug option
didn't pick it up. (8-(
