Thanks for the number, Marko. I called and found that my area,
Heidelberg Heights in Melbourne, will have the service in March.

Apparently there are some areas in Melbourne and Sydney which have the
service available and they are doing installations now.

I would be most interested in corresponding or talking with anyone who
gets the service. The "acceptable use" policy bans servers, but the
service is not charged on volume.

Do they force you through a proxy for TCP port 80? What can you do,
physically and according to the acceptable use policy? How fast is
the service in terms of raw data from the cache or good remote
servers? For general web surfing with lots of small files on the
average modern web site, how much speed difference does the HFC
Internet service make?

What connections to the outside world are they using?

PacRim East and West are or were very expensive - ~20 cents a megabyte
- and there is or was no space on them.

BTW, traceroutes to the USA from my Telstra Internet permanent modem
sometimes go via Perth -> Palo Alto as well as the more usual Sydney
-> San Francisco or Melbourne -> Bloomington Illinois - so the Perth
to Indonesia-Japan cable must be operational. Sure enough:

   http://www.direct.bigpond.com/summary/aboutnet.cfm

says there is a 200 meg link from Perth.

Cheers

- Robin
