[SLUG] Apache square 1

I'm fiddling around with my Apache config. To test my changes I kill the
httpd process, then try to run it again with 
httpd -f /pathtotheconfigfile
and although I don't get any error message, there is subsequently no
httpd process shown nor does it serve.  What have I done wrong?
