I have been playing with an old 80386DX computer and have encountered a
strange bootup problem. Maybe someone on the list may be able to
explain it.
The computer boots satisfactorily from the hard disk. Currently running
SuSE 6.3 but previously RH 6.0 & Debian 2.0.
I can boot from a DOS floppy and have also booted into Linux-Lite (with
the root filesystem on a floppy) but I cannot boot using tomsrtbt or
mulinux.
The problem occurs when trying to unzip the root partition into RAMDISK
in each case. That is booting proceeds as normal untill the hard disk
partitions have been detected. The next line says " compressed image
found at block 601" in the case of mulinux or "at block 518" in the case
of tom's disk. Both boots then say on the next line
invalid compressed format (err=2)<5>VFS:insert root floppy and press
enter.
The problem is evident using two different toms disks, a mulinux disk
and a small linux disk so I don't think the disks are corrupted (they
work in other computers.) I have swapped floppy drives between
computers and also controller cards. I have not swapped memory because
this box uses 30 pin chips and the othe boxes use 72 pin. There is 32MB
of RAM installed.
Any suggestions appreciated
