Your 2nd prob - multiple daemons - not exactly sure what you mean but many
programs (eg Apache) need multiple instances of their daemons running.
Usually they do it themselves from the startup script. Of course, the
configuration could just be wrong!
Your 3rd prob. - nmb - actually nmbd.
If Samba is started up from inetd, you won't see anything running until
someone tries to connect.
If instead it was started up with nmbd and smbd running as daemons from the
startup script then you will see those processes (again, multiple instances
of them depending on the number of connections).
