Very good points. I believe we should go a step further and actually create
and then democratically decide on etiquette and a list of rules for this
mailing list and publish them on the web site and include them when people
are registering.
Here are some SUGESTIONS:
Mails would have to be within topic (Linux techincal questions only. And
that could start at: How do I shut down RedHat - So not really very
technical, but in topic)
Replies to mails would only be send to the person asking a question (This
could have the disadvantage, that one cannot follow the tread and contribute
along the way anymore)
The person asking the question would have to prepare a summary of the
answer(s) once the question(s) has(ve) been answered and then send it to the
list. (Disadvantage: Will every user do it? Will all pertinent information
go into the summary - somebody asking the question probably is not the best
judge for worthwhile content?)
And if the target must be to contain traffic I fear we also would have to
think about only sending digests :~( instead of every single E-mail (This
is a very dangerous one, as a lot of people do not like it and in the age of
information my vote would be against this drastic meassure)
And another point: What about accepting some advertising in the footer?
There might be some companies (ISPs, Everything Linux, Dymocks...), that
might be interested to pay for some money for a small 4 liner at the bottom
of each E-mail (instead of or in addition to "SLUG - Sydney........"). This
revenue could be used for paying for some of the traffic created by the
list. And it does not have to be off-topic. I am sure lots of companies will
wnat to advertise even giving SLUG member discounts.
Well I wonder what you guys think about this.

this is a Linux discussion list.
Although domain names is closer than transport, it's still off topic.
I've just been made aware that our mailing list is generating
over 3 Gig of traffic per month, traffic that I assure you someone
else is paying for.
In addition, if you could avoid quoting whole messages verbatim, this
also makes life a lot easier. Need I say that people who include
html are not helping.
