I also disagree with off the list answers. Because:
1. Not everybody is going to summarize, let alone ably so. This will lead to
reduced usability of the list archive.
2. For the difficult problems, somebody else's attempt to answer may jog
one's memory as to the solution.
3. It will increase the number of replies with the same solution. Whenever I
see a question that I can answer, I make sure I read all other emails and
check that somebody has not answered first before sending an answer. This
means one would have to write lot more to provide same value.
However off the list replies can be appropriate for one liners that are
common knowledge and for off topic questions.
Just my $0.03 worth, (Damn the inflation)
