Some suggestions for people who have stability problems with various
versions of flexlm:
I have to use three different versions of flexlm running concurrently on one
machine because different software manufacturers have different levels of
slackness in implementing the latest versions.
If you have to maintain flexlm on your system, you can do updates live (with
everyone using it) without too much pain as follows;
1) Keep all flexlm daemons on one machine, in one place, same machine that
runs flexlm.
2) When adding new license features, cp the live license file to
something.new and edit the copy.
When you are done with editing, mv the live file to something.old;cp
something.new license_file
This is because some vendors hang onto the license file until the client
exits (Vendor's poor programming style).
3) start "top" and watch for license server daemons (shouldn't see too many
at this stage)
4) lmreread (or whatever yours is called)
5) Watch "top" and don't do anything until the license features drop off the
default display. This is usually where things get unstuck.
6) When it's quiescent, you can view the checked-out licenses. fuser -fu
something.old may show that some clients still hold
the old file. Ignore them and let them be. They will drop out when the
client finishes.
I've been running flexlm this way since about last June with about 130
feature lines, three versions of flexlm and 9 license server daemons and can
say that finally it seems stable.
The only time I have to restart it is if there is a gross stuffup (ie the
binary doesn't do what the Vendor says it does) ... some things never
change!
The only thing I don't understand is why M$ is so reluctant to use this
method to run their licensed products. Perhaps in future they may be dragged
kicking and screaming into it... especially in the case of Application
Service Providers.
Then again, it's M$. 'nuff said.
