Sure, I'm interested on hopping on the bandwagon to support large
companies' demand for cheap, poor quality connectivity solutions in order
to increase profit margins of unaware consumers. Might as well sell them
to individual consumers while we're at it, right?
Anthony, I worked on the helpdesk of a large Australian ISP for about a
year and a half and was considered to be one of the modem experts there. I
remember being the primary escalation point for all "winmodem" issues when
they suddenly appeared in the masses when the big names started shipping
them out. I remember it not being uncommon to spend two hours (or more) on
such an escalated call due to the poor quality of the equipment involved
and the number of times something would appear to fix the problem only five
minutes later the connection would crap out and require more config changes
in order to get it to connect again, only to see the same result.
Sure, you save a lot of money on building the "modem"... then you leave
ISPs to pick up the cost when their customers spend hours on the phone
requiring support. Then there's the cost to the customer - they must waste
their time and money chasing after support, and ultimately they end up
frustrated and angry, often taking this out on whatever unfortunate
helpdesker happened to pick up the call. Nice how such companies treat
their customers. Is Dynalink one of these companies?
It is interesting that you use the word "cheap" rather than inexpensive in
your email, and I have yet to see a softmodem that would fit the latter
rather than the former. I'm sure there are many people who would perfer a
PCI modem over an external, but I don't want some "cheap" crap that's going
to bomb out on me at any time, as it seems softmodems have a habit of
doing. I don't want "cheap", I want reliable and dependable - I have yet
to see a software based modem that fits this need. Somehow I doubt that
Dynalink has come up with the answer.
