If I could just put my paddle in here. The real issues is
communication protocols and data formats. Nothing has been done
about stopping M$ from this blantant broken implimentation
of standards, like Java, Dom, Kerberos the list is very very
long and it's standard M$ policy to "inovate" by "enhancing"
an existing standard. The US govt should pass a law making this
a crime punishable by hanging.
These standards need to be in the public domain so that when
company xyz fails to deliver a usable product you just cut
and run with your data to the competition. And a weenie
startup company with a good product can bring it to market.
Whilst the world exchanges information in the proprietry word
format, even if you develop a word processor that is better
than what god is using you won't get off the ground.
So the new M$ application company port word to Linux, so what,
we are still stuck with an M$ product, and if I don't like it
I can't go somewhere else cause people constantly send me word
documents as part of my day to day job. (Don't try an say Star
office, cause when I send word users documents out of Star
office they are broken when they import them into word, why
because SO is constantly playing on shifting ground as MS
constantly change their format for no other reason than to
1, stop competitors reading their files and 2, make evenone
buy the next upgrade to their product.
MicroStation is a CaD product whose data format is still compatible
with files that where created over 20 years ago, now that is
something they should force M$ to do.
