i figured this one out not long after i posted.
it was actually a very small prob with my code.
my code should have outputted
--- begin pgp etc ---
asciiamourasciiarmourasciiarmour
asciiamourasciiarmourasciiarmour
--- end pgp ---
but instead outputted
--- begin pgp etc ---
asciiamourasciiarmourasciiarmour
asciiamourasciiarmourasciiarmour
--- end pgp ---
notice the space?
