The LaserJet III style was the best thing HP ever made - I have one at work
that we can't kill (believe me, we've tried !!).
IMHO, they lost the plot with the 4 series as rad as reliability goes.

The parallel-port IS a centronics ..:-)

There is a menu setting that will print all the configuration - PRINT TEST
I think it is...
I doubt if it's Postscript - probably early PCL, but you might get lucky..
Don't get me wrong, it's probably a good printer for personal use, but
check the price of consumables before you pay for it..
