About the only problem you might have is compatability. Almost any serial modem will work, but you'll need to do some research and be careful you buy a USB modem that's supported. The SLUG archives would be a good reference for this, as well as the linux-usb-users mailing list, and the resources available at http://www.linux-usb.org/ As for the actual installation and configuration, most recent distributions have full USB support.
