one other thing to consider is hardware support, although your machine now may have USB ports, in the future if you get more keen you may wish to setup a separate machine for dialing out, firewalling, sharing the internet connection etc. These are often old retired PCs (eg. 486 or early pentiums) and may not have USB ports. I prefer normal serial modems cos they've been around a lot longer and work with any machine or OS.
