We did this quite successfully with an audio CD and a white board marker. 
This was something to do with killing the second session directory track. 
"ordinary" cd players don't even try to read the second directory track 
and just play. CDROM drives tend to barf on the corrupt directory track 
but if you successfully hide it with the marker problem goes away.
