I once got it to run rails and mediawiki on a really small vps and it was a lot faster out of the box than apache. That being said I think there were issues with it and proxying and with rails not that that would affect you with your stuff.. The other one I've used and liked is nginx. It's fast and light and quite capable and this is what I use for rails with reverse proxying to some backend http app servers..However I'm looking at apache again for doing this sort of stuff as well.
