A few days I sent the following appeal

"I have just upgraded my old Dell desktop from Ubuntu 10.10 to 12.04
using Canonical's official disk.  So far I am the only user .
When I log in (as myself) I see the standard wall paper but no icons
 menu bars task bars etc.'

That immediate issue is resolved now, following advice from the list.
VMT.

Now I  have another, with email.

I defined my email account on the new version of Thunderbird but
cannot receive any mail.
I spent a long time on the phone with iinet support trying to sort
this out.  No success.
Each time I try to get mail I get an error message to the effect that
iinet has received and rejected the password.
I can SEND mail from Thunderbird (via iinet).  I just can't receive
mail.

I installed Claws Email to see if I had the same problem.  I have the
same problem.
With Claws, I get an option to look at the log and that says very
clearly that iinet ask for, received and then rejected the password.

I suspect that Ubuntu is doing something to the password before
sending it.

Any advice?
