Meanwhile, looked at the problem at hand:

went through BIOS, Phoenix Award, DRAM clock timing:
Performance mode: disabled - boots

If I enable, doesn't boot, seems that might have been it.

So, is that 'aging RAM' problem, can no longer cope with performance mode?
