ya, looks like this guy need a bit of hand-holding.

I have Ubuntu 8.04 on my IBM X300 and it detected and conntect to my Canon
IS860 out of box, as well as printing/scanning via USB from my Brother
MFC-5440CN.
Printing via IP network on cups also no issue but printing to SMB printer seems
flaky (but that may have to do with SMB).

Maybe I can suggest we invite him to this coming Wed Linux Meetup at SMU?
There should be enough experts at hand to hand hold him

Stephan suggestion of him getting a Ubuntu liveCD is a good one.
I will be happy to burn him a copy and save him effort of downloading.

Having personally released a patch which was integrated into the main
Sane SVN for the Canon Lide25 scanner circa Sept 2005, I can safely say
that this scanner *does* work under any recent version of Sane.

My suggestion is that this user grabs something like the latest Ubuntu
LiveCD and give that a spin. Ubuntu is excellent at detecting my Digital
Cameras and had no problem finding my Lide25. Without knowing exactly
which distro this user is having problems with, it's difficult to come
up with a proper response.

Cheers
Stephan
