Hi PV,

The question is, why do you need to compile a kernel? Nowadays, most of the 
additional functionality is available as modules, right?

Moreover, a custom kernel will mean you get no support from the distro.

Maybe you should explain why you need a new kernel (eg: ext4? )

Oh, BTW, if you startup in make menuconfig (needs ncurses) a terminal mode 
curses UI, there is plenty of help online - but then you need to know things 
such as building an initrd or linking the rootFS statically, unfortunately, 
the online doc offers no help here. 

You should look at kernelnewbies.org which IIRC has guides on compiling 
kernels.
