You can ask all you want and for personal curiousity modify. The part 15 regulations allow you as many as 5 homebuilt or modified units for educational purposes but can not be used for commercial usage and not to be resold nor supposed to be anything but test systems (so not operational 24/7)
And no due to the problems/issues with WinXP, no external and few other reasons I not even bothered myself. I sell Orinoco cards for $55 that has external connector already. Sure power isn't as good but support for the cards are excellent and there are tons of antennas already system certified with it. Also netstumbler works with this card. OR I use Prism II based cards that I can use with Star-OS or Mikrotik and make a AP out of and can have as much as true 100mw or 200mw power also with external connector already as well system certified with a range of antennas. These cards I can use with Kismet..
