We lost two APPO transformers even though they were plugged into a battery backup. That indicates to me the surge came from the radio side. I can't say for all the sites that we've lost, but the last one was using a grid. I was wondering if the grid is picking up static and trying to pass it down to the ethernet ground and in the process frying the port. This last site also blew the transformer also. On outdoor units there is typically a long run of Ethernet exposed to the open air allowing for the opportunity for stray current to induce in the wire. Also, not only did our radios blow on several units the hub/router on the other end blew as well. We are in Albuquerque, NM so we have thunderstorm events, however none of our sites were hit by lightning&it was the transient energy in the surrounding atmosphere that did it, we think. On two units the A/C to DC transformers blew as well. Is this common? all units were installed according to spec, and a APC Ethernet surge protector added for extra protection. Antennas were all plastic but we put a ground wire on the connector housing. (grounded antennas are code around here)
