There are many advantages to placing a router at each POP site. Here is a quick rundown. You are able to ping directly from the router to the client, making troubleshooting easier. Performance will be better in most cases, bridging over multiple hops will slow things down. Deploying routers at each pop also gives you a nice upgrade path to set up a redundant mesh of POPs, rather than hanging each one off the next, creating a fragile chain.
