I have had no problems with my airtotal's up to 7 miles from my wipop. Only the occasional freezing unit. The RSSI being bad... are you sure you have clear fresnel zone for that range? I once had a airtotal mounted and pointing across a patio with a concrete pillar like 10' away like 2' off of LOS from my repeater and I had poor signal, I then moved it from that pillar to the other pillar that was blocking it (a difficult task since that was on second floor and I had to get a huge ladder to reach this pillar. But my signal went from like 50 rssi to 96%
Funny thing is we're looking to buy a bucket truck just to make it simpler to get to these agrivating to reach installs so we can put the equipment in the hardest to reach spot cause that's mostly normally where the best signal will be. Also I was wondering does anyone know of a cable clamp staple gunt hat would work on concrete? I found one from atacom but its lightweight the dude said it wouldn't work on concrete.

I don't doubt that the ABO worked, but I'm pretty sure you've got
something else going on. You should have NO problems picking up a signal
from your tower ..even with a rubber-ducky antenna, I'd say. The other
item I haven't factored in is the output of your tower, but anything
reasonable should serve you well.
For example:
Our tower has several radios/antennas. Most radios are airPointPros
plugged into 14dB sectored antennas. We've got one customer 5.3 miles away
from our tower using an airTOTAL. He's got perfect LOS (Heck! He's 100'
higher than our tower according to my installer's GPS) and even with his
airTOTAL, he has an RSSI of about 55% and a LinkQuality of about 90%. He's
doing over 1mB of download. All of the airTOTALs we're using are at least
a mile away from our tower. Anything beyond 5 miles, and I start reaching
for a 19dB panel. But if they've got good LOS (like the guy above), then
we go with the airTOTAL.
All this talk of antennas has got me interested in upgrading antennas. I'm
not so concerned about range since LOS is only good for about 5 miles, but
if it provides cleaner, stronger signal, it could be worth it.
