Our "standard" setup that we have found to work very well in our area is, - Teletronics 250mW SmartAMP + 24 db output - 2 foot LMR 240 with N Male connectors - 2.5 db - Maxrad 90 degree sector antenna + 14.5 db --------------------------------------------------------------- Total EIRP + 36 db The Teletronics SmartAMP will take any input from 0db up to 20db and amplify it to 250mW, and will adjust the input level down so that it wont put out more than 250mW (24 db). The 2.5 db loss is approximated for the 2 feet of LMR 240 and the two connectors, and the antenna is rated at 14.5 db gain. Receive gain for the Teletronics AMP is rated at + 14 db. So the radio is putting out something between 11.5 db (14mW) and 17.5 db (which is actually 56mW) which is enough to give the AMP it needs to put out a 250mW signal. Around here with all the trees, disrupted freznel zone, and interference from MANY MANY sources, we couldn't operate at anything less than the full legal limit of 36db. AMPs were the only way to get there.
