Rob, I appreciate the effort for trying to improve things. But we would prefer if you do not have this available on your web site. We have brought your concerns to our IT department's attention and they have agreed to look into it quickly.
Please help us protect our Intellectual Property. Thanks. First, there is nothing special about the method by which SimpleNMS, SimpleDeploy or SimpleMonitor configure and/or monitor the Smartbridges devices. It is SNMP, it is well documented and is not proprietary, or secure. There tons of 3rd party packages that work just fine with any of the SNMP Smartbridges equipment. In fact, you can easily download the SNMP MIB for the ATMEL chip used in the Smartbridges radios. In the last few days I have written a simple Windows application that works with these radios particularly because I'm not satisfied with some of the Smartbridges software. The point is, if your entire security scheme depends upon that little SNMP password, then you are no more secure from users without this software than those with it. Second, there is obviously an issue with the way this software is distributed. Although I understand Smartbridges' choice to secure this software, it is simply ridiculous to have to register for every separate download and to require registrations to be manually verified. A simple solution to this would be to stick the software on the disks that are distributed with the hardware (as they already do with the rest of the software) and/or require a single registration for access to ALL software. On top of all of this, the Smartbridges website and it's downloads are extremely slow for U.S. users. Because of the above, I have made these utilities available for download from a private site for those that require them. All of that said, I think Smartbridges is looking to improve these things. The list archives contains posts by Smartbridges staff noting that they are working on the website issue. I applaud their products and their level of support, but sometimes other measures need to be taken to get things done. The whole point to sB's process is to verify that you are a legitimate ISP. Do you want your clients downloading simpleNMS or simpleDeploy?!?!?! Heck.most of the software (links) floating around this site should be PAID for. Please don't put a post this on your website. Sully BTW..If you have any clients sniffing SNMP packets (and believe me you do), then they have all the passwords they need to modify settings. Combine that with simpleDeploy and you are SCREWED! The older simpleDeploy still works wirelessly on the aP units. I have one client who sniffed their admin password and then changed their IP in the unit, in an attempt to avoid paying for HIGH bandwidth consumption. He downloaded the simpleMonitor software right off the sB webpage. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Blazen Wireless Sent: Tuesday, August 05, 2003 2:20 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [smartBridges] trying to get smiplenms I think I am going to post the software on my website heheh so many people ask for it and I bet my site is a little quicker then smart bridges :-( Does anyone have any problems with that as long as it is the current firmware and other NMS etc..
